singer 237 and virus on my computer

My friend came over today to use my sewing machine because her is not working. It's her mom's Singer 237. The wheel will not turn and the needle is all the way down into the machine. The bobbin winder thingy was engaged and I got that back to the sewing position with some difficulty. I know the machine is getting power because I tried the foot pedal and can hear the motor and the light goes on. The machine has been sitting unused for years. She can't find the manual. Her mom died a few months ago and she hasn't finished going through everything to see if it's at mom's house, so that means no way to decide what to do next or how. I started searching for a manual and ended up with a virus that took over my computer. Got that straitened out. The virus is called

*Antivirus 360* and will drive you nuts until you get rid of it. It mimics Microsoft software.Threatens you with all kinds of computer harm and tries to get money out of you.

Back to the machine, I told her I would check here and see what everyone thought about her putting money into the machine and try to get it running again. It appears to be a good solid machine that is suffering from neglect. Juno

Juno, I can't offer any opinion on that machine, but threading info here may be of use:

also have a manual for $10.00:

it has been out of service for a long time it is likely in urgent need of a thorough cleaning and lubricating, the manual would be essential for that, IMHO. NAYY,

Thanks Beverly, That's pretty much what I told her. I think it would be worth it to her to get the manual and we can go from there. It looks like a good basic machine. She was wondering about buying a new one. I told her I would really like to see this one working first rather than spend money on a new one and maybe end up with a piece of junk. Juno

My husband picked up the parasite Antivirus 360 plus two others on his computer, and I got to spend most of my day cleaning out his computer and installing Spyware Doctor on it to prevent another infection. I knew about viruses and trojans, but this was my first encounter with a "parasite."

As for the Singer 237, a Stylist, this may help:

seeing it, I'd bet you need to remove the needle, and the bobbin, and clean out a bird's nest down in there, then clean and oil the machine. Just a guess.

Here's an on-line manual free to view.

I took out the bobbin and cleaned around that, but haven't gotten to the needle yet. I think it needs a good oiling and with the guide you linked me to I'll be able to get to that tomorrow.I find that a lot more fun than cleaning up my computer. Thanks for the info. Juno

It may simply need a new belt.

Irene, that was also a thought of mine and it's nice to get the re-enforcement. I think I have to loosen the belt that's on there, it's very tight and I think that's because it's dried out. there is no doubt though that a good cleaning and oiling are in order. I think once it's running it will be a machine worth using. My friend used it for a long time and liked it before her mother put it away, many years ago. Juno

Quite often a machine that has been sitting around for years will get set up. The oil turns to shellac and hardens on everything. Sometimes it is possible to just oil it and work it by hand enough to free it up then once it gets going run with the motor to improve it. Just as often I need to use special chemicals to loosen all that gardened gunk.

Thanks Ron, I'll get it all oiled up and see what happens. If I can't get it going I'll send her to the local repair shop with it. At least she can use mine while she is in need of a machine. Juno

That's really going around hot and heavy. A friend of ours said he got that on his computer last week. Well, he's not sure how to debug something like that himself. So he took it to the local computer guy. The LCG told him that he'd done FORTY of them last week alone!! And our friend lives in a really small town. So 40 of anything in one week is pretty tremendous. Hope you get it straightened out soon!!! Viruses like that are one thing I do not miss since we went to linux here. Most of that stuff is written with windows in mind.

It was really weird because I was looking up something and this "thing" starts downloading on my computer. It looks like something from Microsoft so it took me a few minutes to realize what happened. There was just no getting it off the screen. I was able to get to my search function and look up Antivius 360 and see it was not something I wanted. I called my son and had him lookup what I had to do. In the meantime I shut down my computer by just pushing the button on the front of my tower.. I did that about 5 times over the course of the next couple of hours and my computer came up in Safe Mode. I was able to access google and found that I needed to download Malwarebytes-antimalware. Once I got that program installed I cleaned up the computer in about 30 minutes. It's not hard to do if you can get to the program you need. The problem is that the rogue program covers so much of your screen with all kinds of scenarios if you don't subscribe to it that you can't do anything else. By turning it on and off so frequently without shutting down was what made it easier for me to get to the web site I needed. When I got it fixed my DH started laughing. He said I guess the Russians who send this mess out haven't learned not to mess with Juno, she just doesn't give up on these kinds of problems. Juno

Something I learned while cleaning that out of DH's computer is that you can open the Task Master, shut down the program in Applications then "delete" it from Processes. This made it much easier to get Spyware Doctor downloaded and installed on his computer.
