vinyl cushion sewing and zipper question

I am making a vinyl cushion (of sorts) that is 18" x 14" x 5.5"

I plan to install a zipper to remove/install the foam and i have some questions regarding zipper install.

Is the zipper install the same as for uholstery instructions in my handy dandy RD: complete sew guide ? or are there any special concerns ?

is there a better/best placement for zipper strength or ease of foam removal ?

I was considering putting the zipper on a long edge since there is already a seam there and then i would not need to make another seam just for the zipper on a side ? but i am not sure that is the best idea.

If i want a hidden zipper do i fold over the vinyl as with the more flexible fabrics ? that is making a basted seam and sew the zipper then remove the baste threads and top stitch ?

does anyone have some helpful ideas and advice ?

thanks, robb

You can't baste vinyl, as each stitch hole shows later.

I take the panel that will form the edge with the zipper, cut it with extra width, then fold it over right sides together and stitch with long, badly tensioned stitches down the folded edge and in about

1/2". I slit the folded edge and open out, right sides down. I lay the zipper down, the puller to the right side, then finish stitch each side of the zipper. I then turn over to the right side and pick out the stitches covering the zipper. I then sew the panel, along with the other edge panels to the cushion, all inside out.

BTW, to help insert the (sticky) foam into the finished cover, place that cheap plastic film drycleaners use to return your suits to you over the ends of the foam, and slide the foam in.

Thanks jaxashby,

for the helpful ideas and instructions.

Are there any times when the stitches need to be backed with twill tape or some stitch blocker to prevent tearing ?

thanks again, robb
