We gotta get a life!

I just searched alt.sewing on google for some information. They offer a link to "view profile" which shows posting history for about 5 years.

Well.......

I just got back from DD's school. I was invited to give a lecture in her honors English class about Japanese clothing. They just read a novel set in Japan. (sounded like almost feudal Japan.) Since they talked about different clothing and things the teacher thought it would be cool for me to come in and tell the kids what I know about it. So I did.

The kids seemed to enjoy it. And hey it was a day off the regular assignments. But they asked questions and they enjoyed the little bit of dress up they got to have. I took a pair of hakama pants I'd made for DS and I took a yukata I made for DD and a couple of obi. One was my vintage (100 years old give or take) silk one. The other was one I did up out of cotton twill. I didn't take the big uchikake. Mainly because it would have taken so long to get it off the living room wall. ;) But I did take pictures of it in to show them. They were amazed with it all. And they really did ask questions that sounded like they'd been listening to me. ;)

That's Sharon Hays, guest lecturer to you! ;P

Good job Sharon! Next step is to take in a few sewing machines and show them how to make one. ;-)

Well..... If I taught them how to make a real kimono, that would take more time than the teacher might want to give to that novel. lol The really fun part was how much fun he had with my lecture. The kids really paid attention and asked questions. But he took notes through the whole thing and asked me if I would come back next year when he teaches that novel again. ;) I might wind up with a regular gig.

I know for a absolute fact that several of us do! Check Kate's site, and Sharon's pics. I will soon be starting a web site with pictures and descriptions of my various efforts as well. ;-)

Sewing?

See, Ron, I read sewing, cooking and gardening. That way, I avoid the actual labor. ;-)

The only reason I'm on the bottom of this list is because I'm off traveling to various and assorted places a, I don't have a lap top to carry with me and I won't post on google groups. BTW, this week's project is a recycle. I'm taking apart an old denim dress with the hope of turning the top into a short jacket and the skirt into a Lazy Girl Purse lining. Time will tell if it works the way I hope it will. Juno

Sounds like a fun project, let us know how it turns out.

However, a six week class devoted to "Sewing a Kimono" might just be what the school admins are seeking. Maybe even an adult ed class...;-)

That would be fantastic. Kids learn so much better with hands-on experience.

Well, if the school system wasn't in the red...... :( Oh well.

I agree totally. So does this teacher. He tries to find someone to do a show and tell of some sort for each of the books. He says it's amazing how much of an impact it has on the kids' understanding of the novels. They are reading "Death in Venice" now. Not sure what kind of show and tell he can work up for that one...but it will be interesting!! ;)
