Web site down!

Sorry folks - the web site is gone! In the move to broadband, we failed to notice that the broadband deal gave us only 100 meg of web space, and with the old deal we had 250. As we'd already reached 247, they shut it down at midnight Friday GMT. Oops! Our error... :(It will be back soon, in a new revamped state. Some things will have to go to make room for newer stuff, so if you are particularly fond of something or feel it was particularly useful, let me know. Damn - I now have a bigger revamp job than I thought...However, all this is as nothing compared with the hours of fun and amusement we had with our local friendly computer wizards getting the thing up and running so that we actually have a live connection and can use the phones again tonight! There was a considerable amount of head scratching, carpet removal, and telephone archeology as DH and chum traced the lines we have put in over the years... Because of the way we have used the house and the phones, there is a glorious hodge-podge of wires threading hither and yon, to phone points in every room - and two in some! It's all working now, and we can relax while we consider what can go off the site, and just how we are going to rewire the phones so we can have all the points working as they should... I really think that not only do we need to rationalise and prune the web site, but we also need to rationalise and prune the phone wires! There is no need, with yer actual modern wireless phones to have a phone point in every room except the bathroom - and that was a close call!

I'd suggest buying a solid domain name

? with hosting, then with your existing outfit, have a relatively basic page with the business-related bare bones stuff on it and a link to the new "real" site.

I already have the domain name, but we haven't activated it yet - that will come with the update. I don't aim to do much business through the site - it's 'show & tell' space. I like to keep some projects up there for potential customers to browse, but all work comes from direct contact, either via Yellow Pages or word of mouth. I get plenty that way on the bridal and posh frock side, and even the re-enactors (who can come from further afield) usually contact me that way, though there are contact points on the site. I do NOT need the hassles of internet sales or the expense of a proper commercial site!

I know what you mean - that wasn't what I was trying to suggest. I just got the impression that you had a URL on your YP listing that you were un-keen to lose. That sounded to me like a good opportunity to put up some bread-and-butter stuff to pad out the YP ad with a link to the rest. A lot of people confuse their ISP with their web-site host - they don't have to be the same people - apologies for the error.

There are forwarding agents who give you a permanent address for customers/corespondants to use, transfer that mail to whatever real address you happen to be at. Not very expensive, but still might be U$100 a year. For your next Yellow Page incarnation...

This stuff adds up, yes?

Oh, that's dead easy. I have ..... ummm.... 6 treadle sewing machines? I have a Singer 401 to go into a treadle, too. I enjoy sewing on a treadle, much more than on a lecktrick.
