Which Machine should I get?

I have a very basic Kenmore, & I want to upgrade. I'm planning on spending up to $500.00. So far I'm thinking of these models, but you can suggest anything else for me to consider too. Janome 4623 Janome 3000 Brother PE 400 I know it depends on what you need, but there are so many brands, are there any brands I should avoid?

Avoid Euro-Pro, not because they're bad machines, but because repair parts are not available.

With that budget, I strongly recommend looking at a re-conditioned OLDER machine. My first choice is a Singer 401A. And look at the FAQ Penny posts.

OK, no Euro Pro, thanks.

The old Singers are attractive to me, I learned on a treadle. But I have a friend who says I will love a newer electronic machine. Another friend said to get a Kenmore, they are made by Janome? I wish I had money & room for one old & one new.

Right now Sears has 2 on sale that I want to go check out. Any comments on Kenmore electronic machines?

The old ones are not much! Two weekends ago I picked up a two tone Singer 301 at a thrift for $10. It needs a major cleaning, but everything moves and the wiring is good. About a month ago a really sweet Singer 306 found it's way into my car for $25.

I have had, in the past, two Singers, two Husqvarnas and a Brother. The Brother has been the most reliable, and versatile. One warning, however: if you buy an electronic machine that has a backlit LED display on it, please ensure that there is a manual off-switch for the display. I have gone through two back-light boards already, and while they are not expensive, the repairman was not cheap!

I also found that some of the accessory feet left over from other machines actually worked on the Brother.

The Brother Galaxie II that I have is now about 10 years old. It had the optional embroidery option, which after the first flush of excitement is rarely used. There are a number of good and decorative stitches (including Daisy
