Which Sewing Machine to buy?

Hi there

Presently I have a Brother PS1000, and while it is a nice entry level machine I need something with a little more ummphhh. I want to do some research, but for crying out loud! There are so many models out there and I dont know how I feel about the electronic machines. Any suggestions? I am also hoping to buy second hand if at all possible

Thanks!

I just bought a Janome 6600 and it has lots of oomph. I love it!

I have changed my mind about this question. (I have changed my mind many times; one day I'm going to find a mind I really like.) I used to heartily recommend the Bernina 1230 as a very fine used machine. It seems that they are not making parts for them anymore. Mine's been down 2 weeks while all the Bernina guys are out kicking around in the junk heaps hunting a salvageable part that my Bernie needs. Reluctantly, the Bernina 1230 would not be a best buy unless you're getting one for a backup. Polly

While I have no suggestions to what is good or not....... I just hate reading these threads LOL. I want a new machine and then I don't. I have a brand new serger that turned out to be a POS because it has a bend thingy somewhere inside it and since I didn't use it right away.... well it is now my problem :( My sewing machines are both Kenmore. One is a late 80s model and one is an early 60s model. I LOVE THEM BOTH. Simple. Sturdy. Never given me a bit of trouble. The only thing I hear out of them is the familiar sound of "gimme oil! I'm thirsty!".

Since I don't do embroidery or fancy stuff, tis more than enough machine for me. One day though....... one day.......

The only way to answer this is to go try out all the dealers you can find in your area and test drive a whole lot of machines. It's like cars, different strokes for different folks. But I will put in a word for the Pfaff, which will have the built-in walking foot. A good dealer is almost as important as a good machine. (Probably easier to find a good car mechanic!) Roberta in D
