All in all it was not a good day. It was an excellent day.
At the end of it I have 8 more bowls rough turned (6" - 10" diameter), all from maple, most well figured, a couple drop-dead gorgeous, a couple near the heart, a couple near the bark and a shallow serving dish with bark still clinging tightly. There are also eight other bowls roughed in and drying. Plenty of spalting to go around, too.
All but two (of today's output) will get pedestals of cherry thanks to a fellow named Larry who posted a "free firewood" sign by the road that runs in front of his house about 2 months ago. Free firewood, in this case, was all un-split hardwood including a pretty even mix of cherry, maple & ash. Two pickup truck loads worth of free 'firewood'.
There is still a 4' dia. cherry stump in the ground waiting for me to return with a chain saw and two similar sized cherry trees that might also find their way to my backyard woodpile.
Tomorrow I need to knock off on the bowls long enough to turn 4 commissioned pens and assemble a base to hold two of the pens and a business card holder.
With these pens, my lathe is paid for. ;-) When completed, the bowls should pay for the jointer and maybe the drill press.
