Big burl: how to proceed?

Hi folks,

Well it's a eucalyptus burl thats about 30cm high and 24cm in diameter (what's that? about 12 by 10 in old terms?) and very dry. Natural edge.

I've trued her up and she has three or four deep voids running parallel with the vertical axis, not far from the natural edge and about 5 to 8 cm long. Also a long sap line around about a third of the circumference not far off the base.

I figure something cone shaped would be aesthetically pleasing and reduce the turning risks.

Question is what to do with the voids. I'm seeking your collective practice wisdom here :-}

Thinking so far is that I have two options:

  1. Leave them as voids; control the risk of it flying apart by taping the outside when hollowing the inside. Don't mind voids.

  1. Fill the voids with black tinted expoxy - so they look like sap lines or somesuch. I guess the advantage here is reducing the risk of it flying apart. Don't mind sap lines either.

Are there any other options?

What should I be looking out for to make either 1. or 2. work?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks Tony. Will file that one away. Sitting with the piece for a bit, I don't think I will fill the voids. Will try scorching their insides, sand the outside, and then take fate into my hands - tape the outside and then hollow. Couple of the voids are longer than appeared at first, so I'll hold my breath, put on the protective gear and plunge in :-} Cheers, Ern
