Exotics at Rockler

I was in the Rockler store in South Portland, Maine yesterday and noticed a pretty decent supply of turning squares and blocks in exotic species. The prices seemed very fair.

Pau Ferro 2x2x18 $6.00 Kingwood 2x2x18 $12.00 Kingwood 1x1x12 $2.00 Lignum Vitae 2x2x16 $6.58 Lignum Vitae 2-1/2x8x8 $15.54 Pink Ivory 1-1/2x1-1/2x6 $5.63

These were some I bought, but there was a lot more variety. African blackwood, ebony, black & white ebony (whatever that is), Macassar ebony, afzelia burl, osage orange, tulipwood, cocobolo and a bunch of names I'd never seen before. One inch squares to large turning blocks in almost all of the species. All well waxed.

Don't know if the other Rockler stores carry a selection like this. Maybe this is typical. It seemed pretty good to me.

Also had cocobolo shorts, 4/4 & 8/4 S2S at $13 per bf.

I went in to pick up some Baltic birch ply at half off - the rest was a pleasant surprise.

Pretty good selection in Beaverton, Oregon (near Portland). Also recently have a surprising amount of Really, Really nice but expensive selection of Very Wide, Thick and Long exotics for flatlanders. Appx 6'x3'x8/4 Bubinga (IIRC) for $3,000,00 or so. I just drooled on it.

I recall seeing a piece like that here in Maine a while back. Curly or quilted? Maybe they ship it around the country!

The lumber tends to be expensive. Plus, it's all S2S. I'd much prefer to buy it rough, so I can plane it straight just before I use it. There is plenty of lumber in my stack that is twenty or more years old, waiting for just the right project. It's had time to acclimate, I think. Buying it rough is a bit of a gamble, but one I'm willing to take. You can't exactly tell the figure, but then there is the surprise when you do plane it.

Neither, but nice figure. I rubbed the drool around a bit to get an idea.

This particular board is S2S, but has natural edges.
