Does anyone know of where I can get 2" and 3" (1 x 8 tpi) decent but not so pricey faceplates.
Any help would be very appreciated.

KMS tools was selling 2" faceplate at a good price. I don't know if the sale is still on. Their web site is down but you can call them :

I bought a couple of faceplates from Fisch at a show for $14 each, but then had to buy a 1" x 8 tpi tap to chase the threads. They had been hard coated all over including the internal threads! No solvent I had available would touch the coating.
Now that I have the tap, I'm thinking about just mounting a piece of scrap wood
directly to the spindle by drilling and tapping the wood and maybe hardening the threads with Minwax hardener.

I just bought a smallish 1x8 aluminum faceplate, here's the link:
Same idea, but for vacuum chucks, I've used a hex nut and piece of MDF cut to fit the nut (traced the nut near center on your piece of MDF, used a scroll saw to cut the internal hex shape out of the MDF) - face this assembly with scrap hardwood or corian, and glue it all together. I had to put a spacer between the face of the nut and spindle bearing to make up the gap - 1/2" corian worked well for this. True up the face plate on the lathe.

That is on my list of things to do too. I've been reading the discussion on vacuum chucks and wondering if I could just use that hex nut in that way. Use the same idea but making a vacuum chuck instead of a screw and/or glue faceplate. I had to make a spacer as well because the length of the nut was a little shorter than the length of the spindle threading.
There's more ideas to try than time to do it.

Ummmm, yep. It's a holdover from the drilling rig days. Some things just stay with you no matter the industry.
