Finishing Oil Catching Fire

There have been many instances of used oily rags catching fire, and one more near here recently. But what is it in the oil that causes the combustion?

The reason you can spread 'em and be safe is that the heat is lost to the atmosphere, rather than retained inside an insulated space created by wadding up the rag.
