Moral Dilemma

Spinning some spalted birch while the snow builds to the point where I have to plow. The piece has a couple of knots, and of course, before I can get them fixed, a bit pops out of each. Now I don't like the walleye eyeball look that sawdust fills give, so I normally keep some bark around to crush and attach. None in the immediate area today, so I reached behind me for the stub of last night's cigar. The charred tobacco looks a great match for the color of the rest of the bark, so in goes CA and crushed tobacco.

Have to admit it is an undetectable patch, and the uncharred stuff looks appealing for other lighter-colored repairs, but I wonder if I might, by this means be the cause of leading my brothers into sin. What think ye, worshipful turners? Do I have an unsaleable bowl? Do I put a disclaimer or warning on it, or do I just put it out with a price tag?

If you believe that morals are absolutes, re-name the bowl; ash tray, cigar canister or spittoon and use a charred smoky finish. Perhaps include a cheap cigar with a quality band sneaked on to it. Nah! that _would be immoral.

Just don't sell it to an underage buyer. Ask for ID.

I've heard that coffee grounds are a good filler too and I never heard anything that dealt with labelling it as "Filled with Coffee". Billh

Well, George, I see a few factors that have to be considered here, so I need more info.. Just how good was that cigar?

How much of the cigar was left when you shredded it to use as filler?

Will the CA keep it from rotting and falling out?

Will the CA also prevent harmful 3rd or 4th hand fumes from killing an innocent bystander??

My gut tells me that if it was a good, expensive cigar, and there was enough left to enjoy again.. Then the possible tobacco danger should be noted on the bowl info and used to justify the higher than normal asking price..

If, however, the butt was about to go in the trash, then you have additional considerations..... but I won't go into those..

The charred tobacco looks a great match

Though, to an LDS practitioner, either are forbidden....

Coffee grounds are a bit oily, so I usually go with underbark.

Would you label it 'filled with epoxy?' Or 'CA'? It's become part of the piece, not a consumable. The tabacco is, in this instance, just another form of cellulose filler.

Not a cause for temptation. ;-)

That's the real question--is a militant loony-tune anti-tobacco activist (as opposed to the anti-tobacco activists who are not militant loony-tunes) going to send his team of trained sharks after you if he finds out you sold him something that he considers to be lethal at 100 paces without a disclaimer.

Put on a price tag and buy another box of cigars with the proceeds. You might need more filler.

====>This is not a "moral" dilemma, it is a PC dilemma -- and not even that! The bowl must be destroyed (at a suitable, environmentally safe facility) as it would constitute a symbol of Big Tobacco and potentially lure viewers and buyers into PC sin! It is just another version of Joe Camel sneaking his nose under the tent! Repent, George, and shed your un-PC sins!*G*
