Green Willow Fence

Sep 11, 2006 2 Replies

Hi,

Ive just started the construction of a willow fence to keep in a donkey. Im using (fairly) vertical poles of alder and willow about a metre high, and have woven a small section with fresh green willow rods.

My question would be, in the green woodworking ethos, is it okay to just use fresh green willow for weaving a fence or should it always be seasoned and then re-hydrated to prevent shrinkage ? If I don't season it is there anyway at all to use green willow in this way ?

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks.

Green would be preferred. It will tend to dry in the bent shape. Shrinkage will not be a problem.
