Lathe tools

I have been turning small stuff, i.e. pens, bottle stoppers, bud vases and bowls for a couple of years. Most of the stuff is presents and only a few get sold. I really enjoy this group and refer to Darrell web site for all type of info.

I have thought about building his sharpen jig but have been to lazy, well a few month back I was in the local Woodcraft store and another turner said the best tool he every got was a sharpen jig.

So last week I order one from PSI and set it up yesterday. It meant reorganizing my grinding set up as I have my wheels on an arbor with a belt driven motor, anyway when everything was done I was going to quit for the day but decided I would sharpen one 3/4" gouge to see how the jig worked. WELL five minutes later all of my lathe tools are sharper then new. It took

1/3 the time and ground off half the metal then usually happens when I was sharpen by hand. I also have a sharper more considant edge.. So for anyone asking about lathe tools I would have to say the sharpen jig is a must if you are going to turn and have fun doing it. No more half or 3/4 sharp gouges for me. Maybe I'll be able to turn some this weekend can't wait.

yeah.. a week after I got the Tru-grind jig I was doing a swept wing grind and making cuts that I'd seen Bill Grumbine do on his DVD and said something like "no friggin way"..

I have gone more towards a quick freehand touch up now, but the jig is used often..
