I'm turning some AD hickory for handles for socket chisels. I'm trying to match some that have a tenon on the striking end surrounded by leather rings.
The rings are 3/8" or better thick, which means I'll have to make them up from several thicknesses of leather. Wondering if anyone knows what the makers used to impregnate and glue the leather layers together. I'm thinking along the lines of thick shellac or thin hot hide glue. Any ideas?
Thanks,
John Martin
