Wooden plane handles

In the last few years there are,it seems, more businesses selling wooden plane handles. Do each of these places make their own handles or is there one central place that makes them and then all of the businesses buy from them for resale? Where do these wooden plane handles originate? I've often wondered if some body bought the machinery that makes them, say from Stanley, with the idea that there would be a market for wooden handles when people got tired of plastic, and is now making wooden plane handles. On that note, is it a machine or is there hand work on all of them? Are they made in the United States? Thanks Bob

I'd guess the answer to your questions are "yes", or no. i doubt that they are all made by some mysterious corporate person who sells them to everybody else, if only because some can be made to your order by individuals. There might be a machine that is designed just to make totes for #4 and below or #5 and above, I've never seen one. Since many planes come from either the UK or Asia, I doubt that they are made in the US. Mine are all made in the US, in my basement. I suspect that alot of them are made on a "Oh Darn!" basis in other basements. Are you planning on cornering the toat/tote market? Different makes of planes have slightly different handles, it seems likely that they get their totes from different places. Sorry if this is rambling, the pain meds just worked. Dave in Fairfax
