milestone bowl... I think I'm getting it!

Turned a bowl last night (pics on ABPW) trying not for a "nice" bowl, but to apply the things I've learned here... I call it the Milestone Bowl because I feel like I've come up another step in my webucation and am eager to learn more..

first time that I started a bowl with the chuck screw and cut a good recess on the bowl bottom...

first time that I ever reversed a bowl on the chuck and it ran true!!

first time that I ever cut, sanded and prepped a bowl bottom before I hollowed or shaped the bowl...

First bowl ever turned without a catch or snag!!

first time the bowl didn't get knocked off center in the chuck.. (see above *g* ) Bowl is plum (firewood) crotch about 4" dia. and 3" high, finished with Johnson's wax..

Some of the many things that I was trying really, really hard on were to take lighter, more controlled cuts, "slice not stab", keep chisels sharp and be aware of any degrading of sharp edge, tried slightly different grinds and edges and experimented with them, relaxed and took my time, etc., etc....

Thanks again to all.. you've made the learning process SO much fun.. I'll keep this bowl, along with my notes, as sort of my pre-school diploma..

Have the good sense to save it. Look at it after six months, and annually thereafter. Amazing how you'll change.

If you're a tender touch with the gouge, the recess sure is a great way to center.

====>Now you've taken all the thrill out of bowl turning. Everything will be just humdrum from now on! *G*
