newbie with Jet mini 1014vs- need chuck

Hello all. I need chuck(s) for bowl/platter making. I saw Oneway recommended here-#3? Talon" Other company?

Now for the less important stuff- First, thanks to the many here for all the info that is available to anyone willing to spend the time to read it. I have a book and video coming that were recommended here as well.

Just got my first lathe- a jet mini 1014. Turned my first bowl-used very green White Oak, snapped the rest but was able to use the fence from my Jet hollow mortiser as a sub. Bought a Harbor Freight tool set for 29.99 and broke one of the handles. Also bought a set of Sorby's from Grizzly-my dad lives a few miles from the Muncy, PA store-fun place. I've been woodworking for a few years but new to turning. I use my Makita sharpener with excellent results. The ribbons were spinning off. Fun, fun, fun.

I have tried most of the tools in both sets-have had the best results with a 1/2" round nose scraper and most trouble with the

1"skew-probably no surprise there. Also pretty scarry with the blank first mounted on the faceplate, used slowest speed-500 I think, but still felt a little dangerous-may try to use my bandsaw with a center peg to rough-round the blank first next time. The bowl came out great and I am very happy, except for the screw holes in the bottom-I turned the outside first then screwed the faceplate to the bottom and hollowed it out.

Thanks for any thoughts on the chucks, balancing blanks or otherwise.

If you've already snapped the tool rest and a gouge...........you might want to try lighter cuts. Wood turning doesn't have to hurt...............

not really the chuck, but with the skew, make the end rounded, it makes them way easier, because you can use the middle of the blade without catching the ends. (look for richard raffan books his are done this way)
