Mini gloat #2

A couple of weeks ago, a sculptor at an art show gave me a 3 foot chunk of ironwood burl.. Really cool wood, but it was pretty broken up and tends to fragment on the lathe.. I did get 5 or 6 small pieces turned from it and 4 pens..

I made him a cigar pen from the scraps, (the Mexican guys love those macho ones), and he was very happy with it..

Then, he told me that he'd been working with ironwood again and had saved a piece for me... I'm thinking scraps for pens, right?

He gave me a 3' section of trunk, split down the middle like I was making bowl blanks... about 16" wide and 4 to 7" thick!.

He's been borrowing my mini lathe and if a few of the pieces I've made from his wood sell, I think he's going to get the lathe for a present..

And he should.

After all, we need to take care of our "suppliers," don't we? ;-)

Yep... Like I told my wife, I can replace the mini with $250 and a day-trip to the States..

If everything I made from the FIRST piece he gave me sells, I'll make between $350 and $450.. And a lot more with the nice piece that he gave me yesterday..

I think I'd be asking if there are any givers.

I think that may count for more than a mini-gloat... probably more than a little different down where you're at, but I'd say the ironwood is worth quite a bit more than the mini, and that's not even considering the fact that it's burl wood...

Nice score.

For sure.. I've already made several pieces out of the burl and a few from the new piece... If they all sold at 1/2 price, that would bring in at least the price of 2 mini's..

I think between the 2 pieces that he's given me, it's about 200 pounds of usable wood..
