New to wood turning.. suggested reading?

Good day. I'm new to turning and would like some suggestions on reading material. I'm trying to self teach (can't afford classes...if I could find them). I've got an *old* craftsman lathe with a manually oiled 1/2 horse moter that will take 12" blanks? I recieved some tools with the lathe that were quite cheaply made, so I made some of my own out of 1/4 inch flat stock and an angle grinder. I'm a gardener by trade, so I have access to cut trees and I've turned what I can lay my hands on. Mostly common stuff such as maple, alder and willow and it's generaly wet. I tend to rough turn items then microwave them to dry them, then finish.

On-line resources would be nice, but not above going to the library. Thank you for your time.

Welcome Timothy. Brian Clifford's masterful "Introduction to Woodturning" is just what you asked for. Also make yourself at home here. Ask questions and don't be afraid to enter discussions and offer answers. We are all learners in a great hobby. If I got his url wrong, somene please correct.

You have the envy of most turners if you have easy access to free wood. Wet wood is the easiest to turn and free wood proves a caring God. %-) While boooks are a great help, a person who can stand next to you is far better. You don't say where you are, but if you check my sig line, you'll be able to find the local chapters for the AAW. Join the local and hopefully the national organization and you'll find more people happy to help you than you can imagine. Alternatively tell us where you are, and maybe some will turn out to be nearby.

Im in Bellingham Washington. About 3 miles away from Grizzly tools...lol. I have limited amounts of time to commit to such organizations as I'm a full time girl scout dad (quite down with the chuckles back there...), flyfishing, mountain hiking, volunteer at my daughter's school kind of guy. From March to October I'm working up to 60+ hours a week with the gardening and lawn maintaince so as you may have noticed, I only have a small window of time per year to dedicate to wood working and turning. Most of the wood working time is dedicated to making christmas presents or things that the wife wants for the house. I'll have a look at your links, thanks for the reply.
