Newbie in town

Here's a question to anyone in the Seattle/Tacoma area - Do you know of any classes, clubs or support groups that can help me get a good grounding in woodturning? I'm just starting out and learning by book (The Fundamentals of Woodturning by Mike Darlow - great book!) but I could definitely use some pointers by a pro. That middle school Woodshop class is awfully faint, and I've already found that most of the stuff I learned is wrong. I never knew gouges could cut! Any advice would help,

Thanks!

I am not from that area of the US but I know what you mean about the stuff I learned in middle school. I had to unlearn some of it so that what I make comes out looking a lot better than what I started with after getting back into turning wood after 27 years.

There are American Association of Woodturners chapters in the Seattle are and in the Tacoma area. I belong to the Seattle Chapter, which meets in Redmond on the second Thursday of each month. They have a regular mentoring program for people such as you. They often have training get togethers at someone's shop to help the newbie turners. Their web site is: . They also have good demonstrations at each meeting. Also, Bonnie Klein belongs to the club and often brings in some excellent instructors to teach classes to club members at here shop.

You can learn more about the American Association of Woodturners by going to my More Woodturning Site, select the links page at the bottom of the page, then select the AAW link. Get to my More Woodturning site by going to my domain site and select More Woodturning. There is also quite a bit of good information at my site.

Hey Snakewood...do you have easy access to the stuff, like to work with it or just like the sound of the name?

I wouldn't say easy access, exactly... the local specialty shop carries it, but that stuff is EXPENSIVE! But I really like the pattern, and I use it for accents where I can.

The South Puget Sound Chapter of the AAW meets in Fife, right off I-5.
