Oak Flooring as turning material?

First of all, Greetings and happy new year!!

Now, on the the main event:

Question -

Can I use oak floor boards as a turning material?

How will it work? or, is it just not worth the trouble?

My parents are building their dream house and i was able to score some cutoffs from the oak floor installer.

So, did I score firewood or turning wood?

Please let me know.

What kind of oak? Red oak probably. It might make for some interesting glue-up bowls or platters. Red oak is one of the worst turning woods in my opinion. It's ONLY use for me is in small accent pieces. You might be able to use it as glue/waste blocks but it might end up being too brittle and shear apart for that too.

I'd either burn it (much to everone's surprise!) or use it to floor a small area if it's long enough cutoffs.

a- and answers :)

A- Sure, why not? It's wood, isn't it?

A- Not too terrible. Very dry, can be dusty, nice for segmented, I suppose or for build-ups.

A- Watch for nails

A- Both. Turn it, then burn what doesn't look good. Tha's what I do anyway.

Hi Rob, As a turner who does mainly segmented pieces I use oak flooring all the time. The only drawback is you can only get a 5/8" thickness after planing which is still ok. So if you do segmenting or small scale turning it's well worth keeping.
