OT: and yes I posted in in rec.woodworking as well :)

We are in the midst of a bathroom remodel at my house and one of the material options we are considering for the vanity top is wood.(We are thinking about Wenge.) If we decide to go this route does anybody have any thoughts on it as far as the finish? I don't want it to look plastic but I want it to hold up the the environment well. Any thoughts on the appropriateness of Wenge to this application are welcome as well.

Use an epoxy finish or Bar Top finish and the (any) wood should be protected - make sure you do the back side of the wood too!

I've worked with lots of wenge and my suggestion is don't use it in this application. If you're determined not to coat it with something thick and plasticy, then you'll never be able to keep it clean. Wenge is simply to coarse and porous a wood to not seal with a good poly. And even at that, you are going to have dips and pores in it that are going to invite water, soap and germs to collect in. If you want a dark wood, try walnut or even ebonized oak, which actually might be a good alternative to wenge, since they have similar texture, but you'll still want a good, poly finish on it to protect it from the moisture.
