pepper mill question

Does anyone know an easy way to drill a 1" hole thru the end grain 8-12" deep, oh yes, and straight. Tried a long shank spade bit, but it did more burning than cutting. The forstner bit did good, but shank is only a couple inches in length. Thanks Norvin

The design of the forstner bit lends itself to using an extension or length extender, these can be found wherever drill bits are sold. Start the hole with your forstner bit as normal, drill to max depth, add the extender and carry on drilling. As Martha Stewart likes to say "it's a good thing"

A Ships Auger, available at Lowe's, HD, Ace, etc. was created for drilling deep and straight holes. It would be your best choice.

Since you already have a Forstner type bit, there are extensions available for them. I sam them on the wall at Lowe's.

The spade bit is the least suitable of all drill bits for this task.

I ran into the same problem but can only find an extention that will handle a 1/4" shank, every forstner bit that I know of has a shaft that has a diameter larger than that. I may try the ships auger bit but does someone know of a larger extention diameter wise?

Mike, I went to HD and they have both the 1/4" and 3/8" extensions. The 3/8" was located by the forstner bits and was priced at $9 plus change and will give you an extra 12".

I use forstner bits to drill from both ends. Also, forstner bits with longer shafts are available.

I hope this helps.
