Pepper Mill Mech.

I am going to make a couple of these and am looking for a good mechanism.

I have looked at Craft Supply and Packard. Dont know if the delux at Packard is worth the trouble as I dont have bit sizes for it. Buying special bits would run the cost up fast. I dont know how crucial the exact size is or if I can use a bit 1/16-1/8 oversize. Also, should I stick to forsner bits or will spades work? Experinces would help.

Thanks,

Bob Howell

Pepper grinders is the one thing that I get "stuck" with it seems. I can't seem to be finished with them. I made one for me then a friend saw it and wanted one and before you know it, I was making practically dozens for friends and friend of friends etc. I now sell them and have a back order list of about 5 or 6 now.

I always use forstners and I didn't get a 1 1/16" bit. I use a 1 1/8" and it works fine. I like to stay with 8" or under because then I drill the center out with my drill press (with a forstner). If I get longer than that, it gets trickier.

I get my mechisms from

and have been happywith them. Let me know if you have any questions.

My wood turning club had a demonstration recently by one of the more experienced members on this exact subject. He had a couple of nice suggestions and tricks.

  1. Put the tenon on the body of the mill and a matching recess in the top:

  1. Put a recess inside the recess from 1 above to fit the turning plate. This makes it much easier to install the plate;

  2. Take a piece of dowel that is a bit smaller than the bored out barrel in the main body, slit one end and wrap a piece of sand paper around the dowel by inserting one end in the slit and then turning it. This should be put on so that when the sanding block is inserted into the hole it wraps the sandpaper tighter. Its now very easy to sand the inside of the barrel.

  1. Popular shapes at craft shows appear to be wine bottle and a basic hour glass shaped body with an almost spherical top.

  2. A pepper and salt use different mechanisms due to the corrosiveness of salt.
