Does anyone have any info on this lathe. I bought it as a cheap entry into the world of turning, and I would like to know a little more about it if possible. I mounted it on an MDF board, being real careful about alignment and so far it has been fabulous fun. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi David. I do have a question/comment:

By all appearances, the lathe looks to be set up backward from the conventional layout of the headstock at the turner's left arm and the tailstock at the right. Is it set up this way because of the rotation of the motor you're using? (Is the top of the belt coming toward you when the motor's powered?) If so, then you'll have to be careful about using accessories like a chuck that threads onto the spindle - it'll unscrew under cutting pressure and you'll have a spinning, dancing piece of wood and steel in the shop. If the top of the belt's moving away from you... well then, hmmm. I'd guess it would be pretty difficult to gain tool control.

You might want to explore reversing the direction of the motor you have or keep an eye out for one that goes the other way.

That's what I like about this type of forum, more experienced eyes look at something as simple as mounting a tool the correct way. I will now tuck my tail between my legs and reverse the way the lathe is set-up. Although I must admit, I must be better at this than I presumed, as I turned some very nice Christmas ornaments BACKWARDS

If it weren't for the spindle threading direction problem (which can be solved with a setscrew as already mentioned), you'd have the start of a "left-turning" lathe. Remove the tailstock and then attach a permanent, full-length toolrest.

I don't know what 'ABPW' is. How do I view the pics?

APBW is an acronym alt.pictures.binaries.woodworking. Subscribe to it as you did to rec.crafts.woodworking

Well, I looked for it. it goes 'alt.phreaking' then 'alt.pigwalk', hence no 'alt.pictures'. 'alt.binaries' contains only 3 groups, with no '.pictures', and 'alt.bineries' isn't it either. So just where is this group :-) ?

Peace, Sanaka

Some ISPs do not carry any of the binaries groups. You may have to ask for it to be added, or find an outside service that carries the binary groups. Note that Google does NOT archive any of the binary groups.

A secondary option, if you just want to see the pics, but not any followup comments or other banter is to go to DJ Delorie's archives of APBW. I don't recall the URL, but a quick google on DJ Delorie will get you his website and to the photos.

Hope this helps.

The correct address is:

alt.binaries.pictures.woodworking

and also

alt.binaries.pictures.furniture

Unfortunately, not all ISP's carry the binary groups.

Sanaka, try typing the full name into the search box, and then if available select "go to" or some similar command. That mosttimes works for me if the group isn't listed.

hmm I cant find it. out of the 61077 newsgroups, the only alt.pictures are ones that would get my computer taken away. or get me hung from the nearest tree(courtesy of my mother)

I didn't think it was possible that someone had a suckier news service than me, but you got me beat. I get the group, but only half the posts turn up. Sigh. In a nutshell, your ISP is too cheap to pay for a decent news feed so you miss a bunch of groups. You might try mailing them and requesting it and any other groups you're interested in. Often they'll add a group if people express interest. It's just that they're always surprised when someone requests something that you can do w/your clothes on...

You're typing incorrectly. It's "alt.binaries, pictures. woodworking" not alt.pictures.binaries.woodworking

Hi Reyd, David Babcock and Sanaka. There's another site that's woodturning 24/7 - World of Woodturners. It's a web browser based group of something like 100+ turners and primarily features pictures of their work. There is also some discussion, but the pictures are the draw - at least for me. At last count there were 5350 (mostly woodturning) pics to view. You can post your own and ask for comments, can comment and question others or can sit back, just lurk and browse past posts and folks' albums. Many of those who post here also participate there - you'll recognize quite a few names. There is a handful of professional turners as well as some up and coming folks you'll likely see much more about in the not too distant future.

{Sanaka, I need your first and last name to invite you. You may email me privately if you would like an invitation.}

The deal is you must be extended an invitation by a current member. I've taken the liberty of inviting both of you and you've likely already received an email from myfamily.com with your username, password and info on etiquette, rules of engagement and so on. (You must log on every couple months or else your membership may be terminated and you'll need to be reinvited.) If you don't want to participate, just let me know and I'll see to it that your invitation is cancelled.

To followup on my own message:

It appears there's an intro web page setup that all can visit and request an invite directly from the site admin (look near the bottom of the left column):
