Pine Tree Down

We had/have winds in PA where I am located. Unfortunately we lost a big pine tree. fortunately it didn't hit any houses. The neighbors lost a treee too. Now there is a huge hole right into the yard behind us where there used to be a wall of trees. While happy about no loss of property it will be a pain to have to cut up a pine tree. Wouldn't it have been more fun to have a Cherry, Walnut or Maple to play with! My neighbor is getting an arborist to get rid of theirs. I have seen the bills to cut up trees I think I'll just cut mine up myself. I offered to do my neighbors but I think they want to use an Arborist. It is much smaller than the other wood I have been cutting for woodturning anyways.

Funny thing is I was actually turning some pine just for fun. It can be fun to try and cut cleanly on it though I admit the pine tar is annoying. I will have to dig out my old gloves for cutting. I don't want to ruin my good ones. Also its free. I may may a bowl or two out of the trunk just to say it came from my tree. Maybe the neighbor will want me to make them a bowl. At least I can say my chainsaw will be put to a money saving endeavor. I bought one of the Stihl Pro saws but I think this one cutting project will mean it will have paid for itself.

I always enjoy reading though I don't always post. Happy turning from the East Coast.

Not sure if the pine on the left coast has less sap than on the right coast, but I got mostly water wuth a little sap with green pine here.. I probably turned 100 bowls and things out of it because it was free and we had a lot of it.. always enjoyed the smell and it was worth the mess.. I really like pine for turning very thin, and it's does that well when wet... interesting warps and stuff..

John,

I lost a pine tree to insects a couple of years ago. I cut my bowl blanks so that they included an intersecting branch, and got the knot included in the side of the bowl. Really some wow effects.

Particularly where the rather pitch full knot was translucent and the rest of the bowl was not.

I found out it was Blue Spruce from my neighbor. I found a cheaper place to do chipping. There was another tree that had to be taken down and since it wasn't going to land on my property I decided to let the pros fell it. I took one piece out and mad a bowl from it. Have two more blanks to turn. Interesting stuff as it wasn't sticky and was very dry even though cut fresh. With sharp tools it did seem to cut but as someone mentioned I think the resins were abrasive and seem to dull the tool. Wow the smell was really strong I think stronger than the pine I had done. Smelled like turpentine. I actually opened the door and put a fan on to air out the shop. I won't rush to get any but it always fun to try something new.

Happy turning.
