Tearout on Southern Yellow Pine

Anybody ever turn this stuff. I decided to turn one of my new forms out of a piece of this from a tree my neighbor cut down this spring. Pine is pretty wood but it tears out something fierce and sanding seems to remove wood between the rings at an uneven rate leaving a rippled feeling. Do you think LDD would help prevent the tearout?

I don't think that anything but VERY sharp tools and Very non-agressive forming with reduce the tearout problem. When you talk about the effect of sanding, you highlight the reason for the tearout. Southern Yellow pine has ultra soft and hard grain. The hard grain(for lack of a better description) makes the tool bounce into the soft material, causing what is essentially a catch. I run into this with punky wood I turn. The best thing I've found so far, while not perfect, helps with the tearout. That is Sanding Sealer. It hardens the punky wood and when I use a sheering cut, the fibers are sliced off instead of tearing out.

You might try this method. Hope it helps.
