Pre-Newbie Question....Jet-Mini? What is largest diameter w/ extension bed installed?

Looking to follow you all into the world of wood-turning. I don't plan on turning extensively, but I can see the rare need for a 3"-4" x 36" leg. Mostly 2" -3" I would guess

Thanks for all you help

Hi Colonel, The largest diameter on a Jet mini would be 10" minus the bango. The bed extention will not increase diameter. With extention it's 37" between centers. More than enough for a furniture leg which is usually around 29" If you indeed need 36" legs you will be maxing out this small lathe but it's still doable. If you are a woodworker and want to continue to be one buy your legs. Once you start turning you will spend more time at the lathe turning. It's very addictive and you will want to turn all kinds of things. You've been warned :-) :-).

The Jet Mini will do up to 10 inches in diameter. You will need a bed extension if you plan to turn legs longer than about 20 inches.

Welcome to the wonderful world of turning!

It'll handle the 3-4" diameter easily. The maximum swing on this lathe is

10" but if you need the banjo (the thing that the toolrest fits into that connects it to the lathe bed) to fit underneath the woodturning as in the case of a table leg, it's more like 8.5" diameter.

While the maximum length of the lathe, without bed extension and with the supplied centers is 14.75" (I max it out regularly), you can make the maximum length of your turning be just over 29" even without the lathe bed extension. You can do it by either fixing a "center" of some kind (maybe just a nail in a board) at that ~29" length or fix yourself some kind of cradle for the turning to ride upon out there somewhere. Turn the first

14-15 inches and then flip it end for end and turn the other 14-15 inches. As long as you have that "center" fairly close to lined up correctly, nobody will ever notice the difference on a piece that long.
