Re: Jet 1442 CI legs vs Shop-built stand

I had a Delta 1440 on the stand that came with the lathe. It was not very heavy and it was too low for me so I built a stand using a 2 x 12 for the top and splayed 2 x 4's for the legs and 1 x 4's for the spacers/shelf. it worked ok.

I now have a Jet 1442 and the Delta is long gone (good riddance). You won't be sorry you bought the Jet. The Jet legs have slots cast into them so you can drop in a couple 2 x 4's for a weight/storage shelf. The cast iron legs are very heavy and I haven't seen the need to add any weight. I turn a lot of 10-12 bowls with no problem and they are the right height for me.

With the Jet legs you get leveling legs and after about an hour of setup you can be turning. On the other hand you may save some money and get the exact height you like with the home made stand. Either way you will like the 1442.

Happy turning

Why would you not want the lathe to be as close to the front edge of the top as possible? Isn't that just a dust catcher?

Also I've only turned between centers. Is there a ergonomic difference between face plate work and turning a spindle? (specifically in reference to the height of the stand)

I have a 1442 too. If I was just going to do faceplate work and no spindle work, I'd think about raising the bed height so I could see better inside narrower vessels while hollowing.

Nope, it's a shaving controller. Those which fall are easily swept into the bag beneath. Dust carries aft, into the collector.

Depends on how you cut. I have a 3/4 HP belt-driven lathe, so I can't stab and hog like some people do. Makes it an easy choice to cut everything as if it were a spindle, from center or slightly below. I cut outside, reverse to inside, so I have a good close toolrest at all times, and I use forged gouges on edge for most finishing cuts, finding that control is much better than trying to cut with the wing of a bowl gouge held vertically.
