Question

Good morning ~ Would someone tell me if I am allowed to write posts to your group and answer ones? I found you through a link in a rec.woodworking post and I am active in this group. I am 79 years old, have been woodworking for more years than I care to remember and have a shop well stocked with hand tools and machinery but I have never done any turning. I just bought a Jet JWL-1236 lathe, a set of tools and a book. When they arrive I am going to study the book and then give it a try. Pray for me. Unfortunately there are lots of golfers where I live but no woodworkers so I am on my own. I have learned a lot by reading your posts and would like very much to join you. Thank you.

Peace to all ~ Sir Edgar

as well.Occasional rough and tumble discussions here, polite backpatting mostlythere.

Frank Pain - The Practical Woodturner - is the beginners' book I always recommend. Of course, it's the only one I have, which may be why.

If you let us know where you are, there might be some turners in your area and an AAW club. Martin

Thank you one and all for the cordial welcome to your prestigious group. I live in Spring Hill, Florida which is on the west coast about

50 miles north of Tampa. I have been looking for local "woodworking buddies" for quite a while to no avail. I would appreciate hearing from anyone in my area. The only ones I could find were carvers.

Peace to all ~ Sir Edgar

Welcome aboard. Ask all the questions you want about turning. There are many knowledgeable and talented people that contribute to this group. There are no membership requirements other than an interest in wood turning (and the odd humorous antidote)

seem to be some that might be in your area. Generally turners arehappy to help someone learn how to make shavings. Please feel free tocontact me off-line if I can help in any way.I'd recommmend Keith Rowley's "Wood turning: A Foundation Course". orMost of Raffan's books and videos. Ken Bullock has videos of how heturns bowls and those may be useful as well. I'd also recommend ahook-nosed scraper as a useful tool. If you have a slow speed grinder, that would be a nice touch. Hi Sir Edgar, There are 17 turning clubs in Florida. If you go to the AAW web site

and scroll down, on the left side is a link for finding a local chapter. Maybe one of them is close enough to you. Good Luck Martin

Hey Ralph,

Would the "antidote" be a remedy to something like poison oak??? Sorry, I write for a living and can never find it in my heart to give up the chance to get on someone's case for (there :o) usage of the English language.

Sir Ed,

Welcome to the very addictive and very enjoyable world of woodturning. I hope you're not married; this time next year, you just may not be! There are some extremely helpful and knowledgeable persons in this newsgroup and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to help you with any questions you may have. Fire away and just watch the answers roll in!

If you'd like a list of turners in your area, drop me a line and I'll be happy to provide you with a list. Florida (especially your area) has a large number of prominent turners who, I'm sure, would be more than happy to help a beginner out.

Again welcome and be safe!
