Sanding plate

I've got this sanding plate to use in the lathe-

To use it, I have to put it in a chuck which fits in the lathe by the No 1 morse taper. You can see a witness mark on the spindle which is where the chuck reaches to. Trouble is, the plate is so far from the headstock that it wobbles, and sometimes comes loose in the chuck. Is it possible to get one of these with a morse taper so I can put it straight in the lathe? I haven't had any luck locally (Southern UK), and can't find one on ebay. Steve

Do you have a faceplate that fits your lathe? Cut out a circle of MDF

3/4 inch thick, mount it on the face plate and turn it round and the correct diameter for your sanding disks and Bob's your uncle. In fact, on my small lathe I have one permanently screwed on the outboard side of the lathe headstock and never have to remove it.

Doesn't the MDF tear out when you change sanding sheets? I'd be more inclined to gin up some sort of drawbar if the headstock is hollow. If not, I'd use your technique but glue something like this onto the MDF:

I've got one on my table saw with a slight taper, but that wouldn't work very well with a non-tilting arbor - get the flat one.
