Saw question.

I know it doesn't make much sence to ask this question on the turning group, but it does sorta when you think about it. I know from what little "Practice" I have at turning over the past year, some woods turn better at different speeds. So a variable speed lathe is essential. What I would like to know, read "before I go out and buy." Would there be an advantage to having a 4 speed bandsaw over a single speed bandsaw? Other than the difference in having to change the blade on the single speed when I decide to make bowl blanks out of a softer or harder wood?

I personally cannot think of an advantage unless you routinely move between wood and metal projects. Most of the multi speed bandsaws I have seen a used for metal work. My single speed machine cuts everything from pine to walnut fine. Even ran a little purpleheart through it.

The multi-speed machines I have seen locally cost a lot more than their single speed cousins.

Any one else see an advantage for multi-speed with woodwork?

Sorry about that little attachment on my last posting. We downloaded Hotbar last evening to send a greeting card to a friend. Big mistake. Don't use it!

If you are doing a lot of sawing using different woods you can tune the saw to the application. A friend has a variable speed setup on his band saw and loves it. Mose turners don't use the band saw to that degree. I have 4 pullies on my band saw and use only one.

===================== Mike, The main difference between a wood cutting and a metal cutting band saw is the blade speed and the blade type. If you think you may ever want to cut metal (other than aluminum or copper), it would be worth the small difference in price to get the multi-speed pulleys. Or you can order a set of the pulleys and change it over yourself.
