Set Back and Info needed.

I have had a minor set back in my turning. The 4 step indexing pulley for the 12" Craftsman lathe that i have came apart on my a couple days ago .Luckily the housing was down so i didn't receive any shrapnel .I was wondering if anyone out there has or knows of a place i can get a replacement pulley. Going to Sears has proved fruitless .The replacement pulley lacks the indexing holes on the back that also act as a spindle lock .

Chances are not good. Barring a used find, sounds like you'll need to make do. Secondary indexing devices can be used if you need indexing, and it only takes one point to lock the spindle.

As to step pulleys (sheaves), Graingers and such will have them. If you have a friend with a metal lathe, you can make any into indexing types.

No idea where to find the replacement part, but if you can find a suitable step pulley and just need the plate, contact me off-list at prometheus charter.net, and I'll see what I can do to set you up.

Most likely, it'd be a suituation where you'd need to drill a few holes in the new step pulley, and hand-tap them so that you could bolt an indexing / locking plate on it.

My other suggestion would be to just get a compass and a protractor, mark out your indexing holes, and drill them into the pulley manually. Without seeing the part, it's kind of hard to say which would be better.

And, for what it's worth, I think I've used the index on my Delta once since I bought the thing. I could live without it pretty easily, if I had to.

I have one and it is a real workhorse. The step pulley is cast aluminum or something light. I have seen the same monotube lathe at Home Depot under the name Rigid. It may be worth asking them. Good luck!

Well how damn nice is that? Way to go, Fireman!

Pretty damn generous. Good for you.

I figure that there are so very many things in the world that I despise, it's always good to encourage behavior that I like! :)

Try McMaster-Carr and Grainger. Reid Tools also may have some.
