some drilling experiments and looking for others experiences

I recently developed a wood vase which uses a metal flower vase insert.

I have tried spur tooth bits and forstener bits for drilling the insert hole and have found that using a Freud Carbide Forstner cutter gives me the best overall cut quality with the least amount of cleanup required.

Planetor bits have been suggested, but I found that the company which made them has been bought out by someone not interested in continuing to make them.

I am using a wide variety of woods.

Anyone else have any experiences to share?

Hi, George. I have used Forstner bits and "D"bits. Generally, speaking unless they are small vases 3" dia, I will drill the largest hole and then start hogging out with a Termite. I also use a medium skew with the point catching a bit of the edge of the drill hole and just push it straight down the hole a bit to widen it out. I will repeat this by stepping down, getting to desired wall size. May not be the most sophisticated ways, but I like it and have turned a fair number of straight sided vases that way for housing a PVC or Lucite cylinder. HTH,
