Talk to your bank. Over here in the USA, I use a credit union (a smaller organization than a bank, usually noted for much better service), and they charge me *nothing* for currency conversions. I can deposit a check in whatever currency I happen to receive one in, and it automatically gets converted without charge.

Have your friend in the States send you an international money order, or have him get a check in pounds streling from his bank. It can be done as I have in the past.

The two options I use for the other direction are:

1. Have the sender's local bank write out a check, in currency for the recipient, drawn on a bank in the recipient's country. It seems that writing out a foreign check is cheaper than cashing one.

1. Pay with a credit card via paypal. They do the currency conversions automatically through the CC company.
