How do I view it. If it is a newsgroup, my ISP doesn't support it.

It appears to be a newsgroup, but with many subsections. Which one is it?

And, if it is Yenc coded - how do you put it together?

The name of the group is "alt.binaries.cd.image". Nothing more. If your ISP supports it, and most do, you should be able to search for it. Do not add anything to the name. The title of the posting was...

Subject Header: [13658]-[#altbin@EFNet]-[FULL]-[TAUNTON.THE.BEST.OF.FINE.WOODWORKING-SUNiSO]

I put the title [Subject] in so you would know specifically what to search for. Again, it was posted on 9/23/2007.

I believe there were 53 parts, including PARs, which, for those that do not know, are extra parts to replace missing or incomplete parts when you download. To use the PARs, you just need to run QuickPAR, which is a free download from the internet.

It was uploaded in RAR format. You need to download all the parts, run WinRAR to decompress it and put it all back together as one .iso file which you can then burn to disc or view on your computer.

To download it, you need a newsreader capable of downloading binary parts, such as Forte Agent. which has built-in yenc. Forte has a free version and there are other free binary newsreaders available as well.

To view it you would either need an .iso program (like UltraISO, MagicISO, etc.), or simply mount it and view. To mount it you can use one of the ISO tools, or there are many free tools (Dameon Tools, etc). Basically the tool takes the file and makes your computer think it's a drive, like CD drive, which you can then view and run just like a real drive.

Or simply burn it to CD using any burning software available and run the disc as you would any other. The file has it's own built-in adobe acrobat reader which you can also install to your computer if you do not already have it installed.

Hope this helps! `Casper

Did a search on the file name, in the above mentioned group, and it was not listed.

Due to the bandwidth, many, -many- providers do not carry the alt.binaries newsgroups (period). Others don't, due to the volume of copyright into posted and the fear they could get sued

How do you like APN?

I've been using it for 3 or 4 months because cheap-ass HughesNet doesn't "support" news groups..

I'm impressed with how many groups APN has and the retention period, but have a connection problem with them.. Do you get many retries when connecting or logging in?

I'm sort of suspecting some of it is our satellite internet, but even when things are downloading well APN usually won't connect, especially in the binaries groups..

I like it very much!

I've had it a year now. I've had several premium services like giganews, and I'm on easynews. Part of the easynews draw for me was the free gigs you got by letting the computer run the research screen saver for United Devices. Since I've rebuilt my computer, I haven't re-installed it, but I think the research is still going. It's like the SETI screen saver, just instead to find a cure for cancer.

Actually, I occasionally get that with all of my news services. That might be more ISP related, but I haven't actually sat down and run any real diagnostics to track the problem. Usually it only has to retry a time or two and then connects and usually fairly quickly, so I haven't been overly concerned. I guess I'm more accustomed to it and tend to ignore when it happens. That's when I go refill my coffee or tea. lol.

I haven't had any problems downloading, at least not yet. That may very well be the satellite connection. They are prone to weather conditions in any location in the chain. I'm fortunate to be in an area to obtain cable (fiber optic) so only really have an issue "maybe" once a year. My colleagues who have only a satellite option do tell me they have occasional outages due to weather.

I'll watch APN more closely for a bit and see what's going on. I'll also see if I can get a network diagnostic program running to give me a better idea of where the issues may be. I will let you know what I find out. It will probably be a few weeks as it usually takes that to accumulate enough data to really define problems.

Sorry for the long-winded responses. I tend to try to be thorough. ;)

Not a problem... thorough is good and I appreciate the reply..

My particular problem seems to be binaries... I'll download about 100 megs or so and it just stops downloading... no error message, nothing, just says that it's retrieving headings or whatever but won't progress no matter how long I let it try..

I know when it reaches this point because my email program (Eudora) starts timing out and won't work until I tell Agent to stop all tasks and then the email and web browsing are ok.. APN says that they don't have any daily or per session limits... Hughesnet says that they have no limits..

Sort of a frustrating mystery..

Have you try News.Individual.NET. They are from Berlin Germany? No Binaries.

APN is very good and I believe they are Giganews, but the downside is paying monthly with credits card number in their database. Another good one is News.Individual.NET Berlin Gemany) no Binaries, very cheap like $10 per year. Supernews Talkway, both are excellent. Talkway, was free when they first started about 5 years back.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I require binaries for my job.

I have heard Tera News works well, and they are free.

There are other free text services available, also some with binaries. Google can find them ;) FYI.. For the cautious, I have paid via card for years and have never had a problem. There are legitimate and honest services available. I even met my husband on the internet. It was really pre-internet, but a minor technicality. Not all is bad on the net. Better than a bar! ;)

I've bad mouthed Tera news quite a bit in the past but lately they do seem to have their act together on the free account. I've considered stepping up to pay service but the free service kept having problems every time I started to do it. I figured if they couldn't get the free service reliable, why pay for it? I understand and had no problem they would handle the pay servers first but the free service would have long outages and their posting to inform you of problems seemed to happen about 3 weeks after the problem got resolved. Not real helpful. Now, that I don't spend as much time on it I'm not interested in paying for it but the free service has been reliable of late.

I believe you now have to pay a $3 or $4 sign up fee for the free account now. You do have binaries.
