Indy woodworking show

I took in the a fairly large woodworking show yesterday, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis (still on today). There were very few lathes or turners (as expected), but there was at least one turning society present, doing msc. projects on lathes. Also displayed were some of their members' recent works, some of which were quite nice.

To the questions: are there any shows specifically aimed at turning, or is this such a small segment of the overall woodworking market as to warrant only cursory attention? Was this show typical of woodworking shows around the country?

I was at that show, yesterday I worked, today I was shopping. I bought my first set of real turning tools. HSS no less. Not Sorby though, dammit. Wallet ran dry too soon.

The California show next weekend (woodworks shows) will have a good bit of turning stuff. Otherwise, turning is a little bit of a sideline at most shows. I know of no shows that are "turning only".

I have been to 6 or 7 woodworking shows in the past 12 months, none have been oreinted toward turners. But all of them have had something to see for turners.

I too was glad to see the CICAAW booth. I will try to be at their next meeting.

You must live nearer the center of the state. I live in the South Bend area; too far away for that group. They were decent folk, though, and answered quite a few of my pesky questions. And I'm unaware of any similar group up here.

There was another one in Indy back in October that my wife and I went to. Quite a few turning booths and demos. Stuart Mortimer was there doing demos all day, the pros make it look soooo easy. I picked up a set of hollowing tools from Don Pencil while I was there, real cool guy and his stuff is very good quality. Doesn't seem like there are too many woodturning events around the Louisville, Indy area. Does anyone know of any?

I just happened to be in Indy visiting my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson when I discovered this show. So I'm not going to be of much help on this query.

Was the other woodworking show (Oct.) at the fairgrounds as well?

The show in October was in the Marsh Pavillion. I met Don Pencil there. He set me straight on a few things.

Woodturning is a niche market for woodworking so the turnout is lower for general woodworking shows. The best woodturning show in the USA is the AAW symposium which has a large number of woodturning related vendors. The vendor exhibit is free to the public, but the show only happens once a year and it moves to different locations each year. Orlando in July this year and Kansas City next year.

I'd be grateful if you'd post a reminder closer to those shows, Joe. Thanks.
