Turning Pecan

I finally succumbed to a friend's offer of some pecan wood. I cut out

6 blanks and have spent hours roughing them out. The wood is green and wet but I spent nearly as much time sharpening as in turning.

The thought occurred to me--if this wood dulls a blade so quick, maybe I should turn a disk, allow it to dry and use it for sharpening tools instead of a grinder.

LOL. They don't call that stuff pecancrete for nothing!

Wait until it's dry. I turned a bowl w/some of it once and it was the not fun. The bowl came out really nice (spalted pecan) but I've no desire to tackle another one...

About a year ago, a friend gave me a couple of large, 6" thick pecan slabs.. I asked about turning pecan here and most folks said "use it to smoke meat".. I turned 2 pieces, a bowl and a vase.. The rest will be used for firewood.. Tough wood, unpredictble grain that laughs at sanding.. No thanks, I'd rather turn ironwood or maybe brass.. lol

Every turner has to turn pecan once. It's a rite of passage.
