VL-100 motor

I just purchased a VL-100 lathe to use when my VL-300 is tied up (Thank you Craft Supplies for the quick service) and was wondering what other folks use for a motor other than the stock motor. I'm going to get a DC motor and drive and was wondering if 1/2hp would be sufficient or if I should get 3/4 hp. Theres very little difference in price. I haven't turned using the smaller dc motors. Any and all opinions would be truely appreciated. Anyone looking to purchase a mini lathe should check out the VL-100. It is made with the same high quality as the VL-300. TIA ,Bob Bob, Naugatuck Ct.

Hi Bob, Great choice of a mini-lathe. I have the older VL-100 (the one with the

9" throw). I got a motor from Surplus Center

a controller card. Our club managed to get a deal on the lathes andmotors, so all told I spent $350. The motor is a 2hp motor from a treamillor some such. But it works great. I have all the power I need and don't haveto worry about it bogging down.Give them a call at 1-800-488-3407 to see if they have any in stock. Beingthat its either surplus or reconditioned used equipment its a first comefirst serve basis and depends on what comes in at any given time as to whatthey have in stock. But a varible speed motor for $50 is a good deal.If it were me, and there were little difference in the price I'd go for the3/4hp compared to the 1/2.--Jim M.
