what lathe for $600.00?

Actually, that one sells for $250 - at least it does at Woodcraft. But it's not much of a step up from what the OP has now. That's why I suggested the variable speed General.

Infinitely variable speed is not a prerequisite to good dturning. Rigidity and reliability are.

Did I say it was? But it sure is handy :-).

Couldn't agree more. But if you're implying that the General doesn't have those characteristics, I'd like to know what led you to that conclusion. The bed is heavier than any other "midi" lathe and I've heard of no problems with reliability.

I stated earlier that the stand isn't what I would like, but since that's a separate purchase it shouldn't affect the rating of the lathe. My current lathe is mounted on a cabinet that's attached to the floor and the wall. Can't get much more rigid than that :-).

OK well You all certainly provided a ton of info. thanks! I think I'm going to wait and see if I can find a used Jet 1442 or used Craftsman

15".

I do have one more question though. While surfing i found the following grizzly lathe. from the specs this is a great deal.

Does anyone have any experience with this? i looked around for opinions on it and found ione person who hated it, and a few who liked it. I know the other two are probably better, but is there a reason why i should stay away from this one? Thanks again!

600 is a lousy if not downright dangerous minimum speed on a lathe of that capacity. That banjo and toolrest extension are obscene jokes. The stand should at very least be at the end of the headstock for off-the-ways turning. Better it should splay out to counter the tip caused by imbalance riding over the top.

Of course it has the buzz items like big HP and digital this and that. Doesn't make it any better.

Don't even think about it.

Look at the lathe in the question he just posed and decide if the two simple statements you chose to quarrel with were superfluous. I implied nothing. That's your interpretation. I stated two important facts. Put your money in sturdy, not gimmicks.
