wood selection

Sep 28, 2003 2 Replies

Does any one have any suggestions for 2 items I'm planning:

  1. Mortar and pestle: I have some local (NJ) maple or walnut that I debating using. Is this hard enough? Also, mortars should be rough on the inside. Any finish suggestions?
  2. Chopping bowl: Is maple the traditional wood?

Thanks.

Yep. Stay away from oak and ash and the other tannic woods.

Both hard and soft maple grow in the NE US. IMO for a mortar and pestle, the hard would be preferable.
