Welllll, I don't want to join this month - too much stuff going on. Can I use any yarn (cotton, acrylic, wool)? Do I have to use a certain gague?? Is there a theme - (besides 6x6)?

Hi, Katheryne! Everyone's been using either DK or worsted weight, as long as they're 6 inches by 6 inches (perfection is not always do-able, smaller is better than bigger, if one can't achieve it!) And... most have been using acrylic due to washability and allergy concerns, but that can be discussed with your partner when you DO join-up. Bear in mind, the receiver can't 'make' you knit your squares if you'd rather crochet, and vice-versa,... if you'd rather knit, they can't ask for crochet... and you can't ask it of them, either. One thing that CAN be discussed IS colour choices IF any. *most* are happy with 'what-every*, but some have themes going as they're planning on making something from their received squares.
