combining gauges

(i posted this in knitting as well, but since it's a little busier here, I thought i might get an answer faster :))

The sweater I'm working on calls for 18 sts and 24 rows = 4 ins [10 cm]. The pattern I'm planning to intarsia onto the from calls for 4.1 stitches/inch and

5.26 rows/inch on size 9 needles. Can I work the intarisa pattern on the sweater gauge?

With what size needles are you knitting the sweater? You will have some distortion of the pattern due to the difference between stitch/row gauge in the two patterns. My suggestion would be to use knitters graph paper printed in the gauge you wish to use, and make corrections to the graph if necessary. DA

18 to 24 is a 3 to 4 proportion. 4.1 to 5.26 is pretty close to that. I think the intarsia pattern may come out just a whisker taller in the 18:24 gauge, but very few designs are that sensitive.

The intarsia picture will of course be smaller because the stitches themselves will be smaller.
