Favourite Sock Yarn sources?

So, my new socks addiction is an expensive one - $7-$12 per 50 gm ball of yarn.

I'm wondering if anyone has pointers to retailers, online or Canadian, who may have discounts, good deals, or let you buy in quantity but mix'n'match? (EG - I'd be happy to buy 10 balls of yarn but I want different colours).

In my heart I want to support my tiny local knitting-and-art-gallery shop, and I do, but I don't think I can afford holiday socks at their prices for all the near'n'dears even IF I get the time to do them. Pondering whether I can compromise on discounted yarns from other suppliers and keep buying my needles and artsy gifts from there instead.

Suggestions welcome!

Johanna, "first one's free...." new sock addict.

My suggestion is ebay--I recently went through my stash and found some Noro I bought several years ago, and realize this was $18 per skein yarn, and I got 4 skeins for around $20-30. Remember that shipping is a factor, and keep on the lookout since the bargains are not that consistent. Madelaine

Hi Johanna,

I buy a lot of yarn from Simply Sock Yarn Company. They are very nice and helpful. I don't know about discounts, but they ship quickly, and you can buy as little or as much as you want.

Heh, heh - have I got a store for you. It's a Canadian online store (NAYY), and I have bought MUCH sock yarn from them. You have to watch for when they get it in. Sometimes it's their own brand, sometimes it's others. It's called Elann, and here are links to four yarns they have in stock right now. I visit their store online everyday just to see what they're highlighting.

the colour selection isn't great, but if you find the yarn whenit's just come in, the selection is usually better. Their shipping is fast, and don't forget to add the shipping charges to your per skein price but Ithink you'll find them quite reasonable. Here's a link to another online store - but I haven't ordered from them so can't comment on their shipping, etc. Some of their buys look pretty good.

Johanna,

I use this company for sock yarn, I have had good luck with them. The first is on sale. The prices are hard to beat for decent yarn.

My first question would be - what kind of yarn do you want? All wool? Cotton/acrylic blend? Self striping? Solid? Hand Painted? I am pretty much only hand painted now, just love the colors, but it will be about $12+ per 50 gm ball...

Ooh, any or all of those, but I'm trying to avoid the pricier ones until I've got a few more pair "under my needles" so I don't make a mess with really expensive stuff.

Thanks for all the links, everyone - I'm going home tonight to build a new section into my bookmarks!

I did find

(NAYY, the usual) which had awool/polyamide in some funky colourways on sale for < $5 per 50 gm.Ordered a few of those, as they're Canadian, so I avoid all thenonsense of shipping cross the border. The price AFTER taxes andshipping wound up a couple bucks below the sticker price in-store, soI'm a little bit ahead.

I think I've got enough now to keep me clicking through New Year's. Once I'm done the current pair from a Regia sock ball for the Spousal Euphemism, I'm going to start trying out some variations.

knitpicks is great, but i've had some "pilling issues" - after awhile the socks seem to be wearing down.

i signed myself up for the updates on herschner's.com ... they have great sales and usually you can scout some cheap finds...

has good online sales. The onlyproblems are 2 - there's a minimum order ($40 I think) and flat rateshipping ($10). However you can buy a lot and still have it shippedfor $10. They had some very nice Italian wool blend yarn for socksfor $1.99; I also got some Bernat Sox (cotton and acrylic) from them.Alison

Smiley's is fine as long as you're an American. They won't ship to Canada or anywhere else. I prefer to find a Canadian source (like Elann) where my dollar IS a dollar (not .80 cents), plus duty, blah, blah, blah. That's why I like Elann (NAYY) - they bill in both currencies, but are based in Canada. Plus they have some GREAT bargains; you just have to visit their site every day to see what's available.

I'm sorry about the shipping difficulties. Yes, Elann has some wonderful yarns but don't blink! (because as you say the site changes every day)
