why don't you think your yarn will work? it's not the fulling that makes the "mohawk" stand up. if you can get your yarn looped in there tightly enough, it should stand up just fine. if not, you can starch it, just like a real 'hawk ;)
i don't have the book in front of me, but it appears to be barely fulled anyway. the stitch definition is pretty distinct in the photo. it looks like the strands for the 'hawk are about 4"? so 8" doubled. i suspect you can do that as written. lee
Hi Lee, I did a few pieces of fringe like it said to and they flopped over miserably. According to the directions, the wool of the mohawk comes out of the wash all tangled and you're supposed to tear it to bits and end up with this lovely fluffy "do". I tried teasing out the strands (didn't wash it, though), and that failed miserably. So before I went any further, I decided to write to you all for help. Wendy
That is *some* hat, Wendy. ;-)

did you try making a sample, washing it (hot) & drying in a dryer? the fringes on my acrylic afghan got all matted & look like the mohawk fringe... maybe that would work with the hat? lee
Hi Wendy - I read your other post about the yarn not acting like the pattern yarn. I think if it were me (I?) I would knit the hat in wool and line it with a soft thin fabric like silk. Or I'd knit a facing out of something really soft and then fold it to the inside and tack it down.
What a hat!

oh good idea! Ok, before I try everythng else, I think I'll try that with a sample piece. Thanks! Wendy
Interesting looking hat :D
There's no percentages to give on felting. It depends on how you felt and what you felt. Everything shrinks differently. Shrinking-percetage can be anything between 10% and 50%, usually with pure wool when knit it's about 25% and when doing normal felting, shrinking is usually 20-50%

oh my! I had no idea it was that much! hmmmmm....Thanks! Wendy
