Maryland Sheep & Wool Fest

What a heavenly weekend! The weather has been just perfect, nice and cool but sunny. Of course yesterday was VERY windy, which kicked up the dust at the county fairgrounds as we walked all over it. My brother, a piano tuner and rebuilder, came up for this year's fest to hear some of the wool lectures and find out what he could about particular breeds of sheep, and shearing techniques (wool is essential to the piano trade, both for covering hammers and for the strips of felt bushing). So my mother drove up as well, and we had a lovely day. I was very good about not adding to my unfinished...well...unstarted projects from past fests until we got to the cashmere booth in the main exhibition hall, and I picked up a lovely plum-brown skein of laceweight and a kit for a laceweight scarf. Mom went nuts over the Orenburg lace shawls so one of these projects will be her Xmas or bday present. We watched the sheepdog trials (mom & bro are dog people and Mom had a pet collie-shepherd mix growing up), ate gyros and lamb sausage, and came home to sit on the back porch nibbling and sipping after Mom unloaded the hostas, hollies and cherry laurel she'd brought me, and my bro dug out the lilacs for her. The big surprise was a garden bench kit for our yard (my birthday's coming up)!

All in all, a perfect day!

There was also a spinning wheel from PVC pipe and a few essential metal parts. I am often amazed by the ingenuity people have.

Ah...I must have let go of my mouse to quickly,

Yes please, and thank you.

That is what you get when you garden for hours on end. On knees in the garden putting rocks in place for my raised flower bed. Then numerous trips to the compost, to add new soil, get out the shovel and mix it in, now put in the little herbs I bought last week. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention putting in a new soaker hoose (3) before I put in the new plants. It looks great though and the water supply works well also

Els with thanks for fixing my mistake

From Els to my e-mail:

Thanks for sharing, for now I have to make do with the great stories from everyone on the Eastcoast going to the Maryland Sheep and Wool Fest. I am sure that one year i am going to make it as well, and maybe even meet up with you all. Helen were you there as well?

Always! I work a booth at the fair, demonstrating my spindles and also wool combs. The crowds were record-breaking on Saturday, somewhat more normal on Sunday. I didn't get out to look around much, but I did get a very nice fleece and a little ingeo fiber to play with. It's just so pretty and shiny that I couldn't resist.
