Sunday AM: RCTY, blog-surfing and coffee/tea...

Good morning! I was up until the wee hours last night, doing some of my usual Sunday blog-surfing "early"... and slept "in" today... first time I've gotten up after 6am in years! (I got up at 7am!!!). Coffee's on, I've got my huge mug, and I'm here, reading ya'll... next is a new entry at my blog. Hugs, Noreen

We slept in this morning as well. DH is usually up with the birds but not today. He isn't singing in the choir this spring and that gives him a chance to sleep a little later. I hear him puttering in the kitchen now, so I'd better head down there soon. I am really loving working with the baby alpaca yarn I bought at the Madrona Fiber Arts Retreat. It is really soft and the color is great - wonder how it will wear. The gloves I am making with it will be worn for warmth and would fit easily under outer gloves or mittens, so maybe that isn't a big issue. I am thinking about a simple beanie style hat or a small scarf with the rest of it as I bought at least one ball too much for this project. I got some Jamieson's dk in a cardigan kit on e-bay and it came with a book that had lots of temptations for other projects. I was glad to read that the dry cleaning recommendation is foolishness - the alternate recommendation was careful washing with mild shampoo. I try to avoid dry cleaning and couldn't figure out why the wool would require it . Obviously one wouldn't want to unintentionally felt it (I suspect it felts wonderfully well) but I assume most pure wools can be washed. Does that make sense to you?

ooh, I love baby Alpaca, I have some Perlita from Peru! Absolutely, ALL pure wools can be safely washed!!! Hugs, Noreen (Don was up at his usual 4:30-5 am-ish.... I felt like a MOOSE, sleeping in like this! He was out on the back deck enjoying our 'mild' weather when I came 'stumbling' out, grin!)

The very thought of mild weather sounds so appealing. We continue to get snow, even though my daffodil tips are up at least 3 inches.

I hope to finish my "Flyaway Free" sweater today. Fun to do a project that works up so quickly. Has anyone ever sewn together a project that uses the Veil Stitch? It's one of those that you can do either with a figure eight wrap around both needles or a double wrap around one. Next row the work "drops" to give an open effect. I'm curious about sewing those open areas together, as they occur every fourth row.

It's heading towards noon here, so I'm off to make some lunch for my fellas. My son is still recovering from his St. Patty's day festivities, so perhaps it will just be me and DH!

JCT, I am afraid I am one who regularly says to everyone that if wool shrinks when it is wet just imagine how the poor sheep must feel after a few summer storms. I have been knitting for seventy years and have *never* sent anything to the dry cleaners - in fact even garments with "dry clean only" get washed in my house and with no ill effect at all.

I use the same detergent as i use for all washing - if the garment is particularly delicate I use a soft dishwashing liquid - the water is tepid and importantly the rinses are the same temp. The garment is spun dry just long enough to get the most of the water out and then it is layed flat on a towel to dry in the shade. If necessary ( some stitches semm to bunch up sometimes and not show the pattern until worn a few times) you can pin it out to size - or if it had become too small ( too many calories!!!) it can also be stretched at the same time. My daughter has jumpers that I knitted her when she first went to University at 17 and is now 48 and all her knitted still look like new and have been washed countless times as above. We even put one in a dryer the other day when I was visiting her as it was still damp when needed and it was just fine - naturally on a low heat and not for too long. God Bless gwen
