Measuring Knitting

This is probably a silly question, but here goes. When you measure a length of knitting, do you count the stitches still on the needle? Usually this wouldn't matter, but if you are using large needles it can be close to 1/2 inch. Thanks. Cow Whisperer

Yes. Those stitches will be part of the thing you're knitting, so they count in the measurements.

Hi

When I measure my knitting I lay in on a flat surface and measure from the cast on edge to just the bottom of the needles. If you add the width of the needles the finished item will be short by the width of the needle.

Hope this helps.

That makes sense, since the last row will be bound off at some point, and won't be a full stitch tall. I never really thought about it.

Does anybody else never measure but, count rows instead? I find it works better for me.

Hi Donna,

Yes, I've counted rows many times instead of inches, especially when I've done the fronts or sleeves separate.

I have always wondered about sleeves. When they say to knit until making the sleeve cap a certain length like 15 inches , measured from UNDER the arm to end of the arm?

Yes. The sleeve cap is the shaping for the top of the sleeve where it goes into the armhole. So the 15 inches before that would be measured from the wrist to under the arm.
