HELP if you can!

I'm new at this (duh), and I'm trying a simple cable on an afghan. Simple pattern, only 10 rows. Here goes.

Rows 1,3 and 5: knit (I can do that!) Rows 2 and 4:P3, k2, *p5, k2; rep from * across, end last rep p3 (I can do that too!) Rows 6 and 8: [K2,sl 1] twice, *k3, sl 1, k2, sl 1;rep from * across, end last rep k2. ( I can even do this, no prob) Row 7: P2, sl 1, k2

WAIT!! When do I bring the yarn back for the next knit stitch? After the purl, or after the slip?

then it goes on:sl 1, *p3, sl 1, k2, sl1; rep from * across, end last rep p2.

Here comes the tiny cable Row 9:K2, {cross 4(C4)}sl 1 to cn, hold in front, k 3rd stitch on LH needle, k first and 2nd sts, k1 from cn. HUH??? How the heck do I knit the 3rd stitch, then the 1st and second? then it goes on *k3, c4;rep from * across, end last rep k2.

Row 10: repeat Row 2.

It's a really pretty pattern called Celtic Tradition by Joyce Englund, who, OF COURSE doesn't have a website for idiot questions like mine.

Thanks, I hope!!! Sue

Not so simple, with the tiny cable.

What mirjam said: swatch and decide what you like the looks of. Personally, I'd bring the yarn back for the knit before the slip.

Mirjam told you how. Here's why: What you're doing is taking a group of four stitches to make a two-stitch cable that is stretched across two ordinary stitches.

You're crossing stitch 1 and stitch 4, with stitches 2 and 3 done normally in the middle.

Think of it as using two cable needles: Use a cable needle to take stitch 1 off and hold it in front. Then use a cable needle to take stitches 2 and 3 (in their ordinary order) off and hold it to the back. Then knit stitch 4. Then knit stitches 2 and 3 off the cable needle in back. Then knit stitch 1 off the cable needle in front.

Knitting stitch 4 with the other two still on the needle is a little fiddly but probably easier and faster than handling two cable needles at once.

Most instructions will tell you to slip knitwise or purlwise. I found it's often hidden in the basic description and not repeated in the actual shorthand of the pattern as "special instructions" or "notes". If you are slipping purlwise, the yarn comes to the front before you slip and goes back immediately after if the next st is a K.
